Online resource links give McAfee security warning (Verizon home internet)

Some users with Verizon home internet have experienced security errors trying to load selected online resource links from HOLLIS, PubMed, and other library tools. The specific error message varies depending on browser and operating system but typically mentions that the data authenticity couldn't be confirmed, that the site is not secure, or that the originator doesn't match the requested material.

Some home internet service providers, notably Verizon/FIOS, have started using a web security product on behalf of their customers called McAfee Secure Home Platform, designed to block unsafe web traffic. However, McAfee sometimes misidentifies legitimate library resources as suspicious and blocks them from the user's computer. Disabling this optional setting should allow the links to load successfully:

  1. Install/open the MyVerizon app
  2. Log in to your Verizon account
  3. Go to Home / Internet / Network Protection
  4. Turn off "Network Protection"

You may also be able to work with Verizon to whitelist the IP address used to deliver library e-resources: 128.103.147.149

We have also read that some cable modem and wireless router manufactures have incorporated McAfee web security into their products' firmware. You can work with your modem/router's manufacturer support to adjust the firmware settings and resolve the issue there.
